RST Net, in collaboration with Eyjablikk and the Westman Islands Centre, was responsible for connecting sea pipes, district heating pipes as well as installation and connections of all electrical and machinery of the heat pump station in the Westman Islands
The heat pump station is 10,4 MW and is expected to supply about 80% of the district's energy needs. The heat pump station has seawater pumps that pump 6-700 litres of 6-11°C hot sea water through evaporator and cool it down. The energy supplied by cooling is transferred to a second heat exchanger, which heats up the hot water.
There are more than 50GWSt of energy savings that make this project economical. These 50GWSt will then enter the general electricity market, and the heat pump station is therefore considered a very cheap power plant option.
